Symptoms

Common Symptoms of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, frequently abbreviated as BPPV, is a condition associated with the inner ear. Individuals dealing with this condition often experience the following symptoms:

  • Dizziness: A sense of unsteadiness and a tendency to lose balance.
  • Nausea: This may occur independently but often accompanies spells of dizziness.
  • Vertigo: A sensation of the environment spinning around you or feeling like you’re spinning.
  • Problems with balance: Difficulty with staying steady when walking or standing.

Symptom Variability

Symptoms of BPPV can vary greatly amongst individuals and are commonly triggered by changes in the position of the head. This tends to happen when standing up or lying down, tilting the head upward or downward, or by rolling over in bed.

Warning Signs for Professional Help

If you experience a sudden onset of any of these symptoms, it’s vital to seek professional healthcare advice immediately. Other alarming signs include vertigo episodes lasting longer than a minute, dizziness persisting for more than a week, or any other unusual symptoms.

Causes

One key to successfully managing Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) lies in understanding its root causes. Insight into these triggers allows for targeted, effective treatment options.

Common Causes of BPPV

These include:

Inner ear damage: Likely the most common source, harm to delicate inner ear structures can dislodge tiny calcium particles, leading to BPPV.

Age: We see a rise in BPPV cases in individuals over the age of 60.

Common Factors contributing to BPPV

Some significant factors include:

Sudden head movements: Quick changes in head position can momentarily disorient the inner ear, triggering vertigo.

Prolonged bed rest: Extended periods of lying down can provoke BPPV, especially in those already susceptible due to other factors.

Treatment Approaches to Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

At the Push Pounds Sports Medicine Centre, we’re committed to providing the most advanced and effective treatments to deal with a range of medical conditions, including BPPV. There are several treatment approaches available, each strategically chosen to help restore balance and mitigate vertigo symptoms.

1. Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a conservative but highly effective approach in managing BPPV symptoms. It utilizes a set of specific head manoeuvres and exercises aimed at reducing dizziness and enhancing balance.

2. Chiropractic Care

Our chiropractic treatments focus on realigning your body’s musculoskeletal structure and improving nervous system functions, indirectly assisting with vertigo management.

3. Acupuncture

This holistic technique is employed to stimulate specific points on the body, resulting in enhanced energy flow. Recent research has shown that this ancient technique can offer potential relief for BPPV symptoms.

4. Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can be a complementary tool to other treatments. It is aimed at improving circulation, reducing stress and enhancing patient wellbeing, which can indirectly help manage vertigo symptoms.

5. Regenerative Medicine and Orthopedic Interventions

Our state-of-the-art Synvisc Injections, Durolane Injections, and PRP Injections are known for their potential role in tissue regeneration and inflammation reduction. Though secondary, these interventions have shown promising results in managing vertigo in some patients.

All these interventions are customised depending upon an individual’s symptoms, health status, and therapeutic response. They are usually accompanied by an inclusive wellness routine for a complete, holistic healing approach.

I had an injury in my disc that was life altering. I had pain 24/7 and I could no longer live my normal life. I couldn’t sit at work, no more sports, gym, exercise and I gained a lot of weight. I went to many physio sessions, chiro’s, RMT, cold bats, etc at other clinics, but I was still in pain. I decided that I needed a real plan to get control over my life. I asked around and I was referred to Studio Pushpounds. My friends indicated NBA players, EPL, NHL players fly and/or come here for treatment when they are in Toronto. If the best of the world trusts this clinic, then it would surely be good enough for me. My doctor was Dr. Darrin Germann. Dr. German is my hero. He spent time to properly diagnose my issue and create a gameplan that was altered after every session based on progression. Every time I entered his room, he was reviewing our notes, and like a mad genius planning out that day’s sessions. He knows each case personally, and I could tell he was invested in my health. And in turn, I put in my 100% efforts to what he wanted me to do not just in the clinic, but outside of it. I’m now back in the gym, swimming, and pain free. If you are dedicated to fixing your problems, I highly recommend you see Dr. Germann. Dr. Germanns character is class, and he is very professional. The man is a stud and a great inspiration and a role model you need when going through injuries. He does what he preaches, and it shows in his own physique and lifestyle in terms of diet and workouts. He is going to do big things in his field and if you are lucky enough to see him for your treatment, he is the miracle you have been looking for. Thank you, Doc., You already know how much my life quality has changed.

The Push Pounds Sports Medicine Team is incredible! We researched four different clinics before choosing Push Pounds and deciding on Josh Irwanto as the main physiotherapist for our teen’s ACL recovery. The attention and level of care from the start of our recovery program was remarkable. Josh and Peter (second physiotherapist team member) took the time to explain the recovery plan while demonstrating compassion and understanding along the complete process. Our child felt motivated, supported and driven to work hard. Our family has immense gratitude towards the Push Pounds team and their knowledge + professionalism towards their patients recovery goals. Our teen is back playing on the field healthier and stronger than ever. A million thanks to Josh and his entire team!

If you’re recovering from an injury of ANY kind, look no further, Push Pounds/Studio Athletica is the ONLY place to go. After a nasty proximal humerus fracture, I was at a loss when it came time to start rehab. After endless searching and coming across Studio Athletica online, I found Physiotherapist Josh and decided to start my healing journey. Josh (alongside every single one of the support staff) has been an integral part of my healing not only physically, but mentally as well. You don’t really know the effects of a bad injury has on your entire wellbeing until it happens to you. And at 35 and never having broken a bone, I thought I was in the clear. ;) Josh’s dedication to my progress each week was what kept my spirits up. He knew when to push me and when not to and provided endless encouragement along the way. Physiotherapy included a combination of treatments on the table as well as mobility and strengthening in the gym. After months of this combo and being diligent about my at-home exercises, I’m confident in saying that I have my arm/shoulder back and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I must add.. during the time I was rehabilitating my shoulder, I had some foot injuries along the way. After an assessment from Josh during an appointment, he said that Chiropractor Dr. Germann was the person I should see. Everything that I said about Josh above can be echoed about Dr. G. Another gem of a human and incredibly knowledgeable about the craft of healing. Safe to say a have two working feet and back to walking many, many km’s a day. Long story short, if you want a dedicated team, top of the line treatment options, and a gym with all the equipment you could ever need, Push Pounds/ Studio Athletica is the place for you.

Late last year I developed achilles pain that was impacting my ability to play high-level sports so I was referred to Dr. Darrin Germann at Push Pounds/Studio Athletica. I saw Dr. Darrin weekly and the sessions were split between gym exercises (the facility is brand-new and has a fully equipped gym with turf) and treatments which allowed for a more holistic approach to my recovery. Dr. Darrin always had a game-plan ready for the day based on how I was feeling that week and adjusted as needed. He got me back on my feet playing on the national team for Ultimate frisbee within 4 months! The entire team is welcoming, friendly and well-organized. I can’t recommend it enough!
